Securing early-stage capital for African startups has become increasingly challenging. While overall startup funding across the continent reached $1.44 billion in the first half of 2026, early seed cheques under $500,000 accounted for just 19% of all deals—a sharp drop from 52% in 2021. With grant opportunities also shrinking, non-dilutive, equity-free support offers a vital lifeline for ambitious founders looking to scale their solutions.
Stepping up to bridge this gap, the Royal Academy of Engineering has officially opened applications for the 2027 edition of the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. Backed by the UK International Science Partnerships Fund alongside private donors, the flagship initiative has empowered over 180 businesses across 24 African nations since 2014.
Comprehensive Mentorship and an £85,000 Equity-Free Prize Pot
Sixteen shortlisted innovators will receive an intensive eight-month training and mentorship package running from February to November 2027. Designed to transform technical prototypes into commercially viable enterprises, the program includes tailored business coaching, one-on-one financial modeling, dedicated engineering mentorship, media training, and a high-profile pitch showcase in a major African city.
The program culminates in an £85,000 equity-free prize fund. The grand winner receives £50,000, three runners-up receive £10,000 each, and an audience vote awards £5,000 to one shortlist member. Crucially, the Academy takes zero equity and allows founders to retain 100% ownership of their intellectual property.
Flexible Eligibility Criteria for Sub-Saharan African Founders
To qualify, innovations must be based in Sub-Saharan Africa and progressed beyond the initial concept stage, demonstrating a functional prototype or Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with early customer traction.
The Academy defines “engineering” broadly, welcoming applicants from fields such as information and communications technology (ICT), computer science, agricultural technology, biotechnology, and medical engineering. Founders do not need a formal engineering degree to apply, ensuring that self-taught innovators, researchers, and multidisciplinary teams can compete on equal footing.
Strict Rules on AI
Applicants must adhere strictly to the program’s integrity policies regarding artificial intelligence. While founders are required to disclose any generative AI tools used in writing their applications, submitting AI-generated products, synthetic prototypes, or artificially enhanced images will result in immediate disqualification.
