NLNG Shortlists Top 5 Documentary Filmmakers for Inaugural $20,000 Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts

Established in 2025 and sponsored by Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), the prestigious award carries a $20,000 cash prize designed to elevate emerging creative talents aged 18 to 35. Anne-Marie Palmer-Ikuku, Manager of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs at NLNG, confirmed the finalists following a multi-stage adjudication process that evaluated stories capturing the nuanced realities of contemporary Nigerian life.

Exploring “Identity”: The 5 Shortlisted Documentaries

The central theme for the maiden competition, “Identity,” challenged young directors to investigate the cultural, social, and geographical elements that define what it means to be Nigerian today. Out of 11 semi-finalists, five compelling projects made the final shortlist as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria:

• Beyond Tarkwa Bay by Peter Oghenetega-Oke: A poignant exploration of coastal community life, displacement, and belonging around Lagos’ iconic waterfront.
• Mara Mania by Feranmi Abiola: A creative dive into youth culture, urban expression, and modern social dynamics.
• No Food for Lazy Man by Ummi Bukar: An insightful look into grit, informal labor, and economic survival across local communities.
• Okrika by Abraham Aiwuyuse: A documentary examining the cultural heritage, commerce, and social character of the Okrika people.
• Women of Salt: The Resilience of Ebonyi’s Women by Jessica Chinyere: A moving tribute to the strength, labor, and economic endurance of female salt miners in Ebonyi State.

The creation of the NPCA reflects NLNG’s long-standing commitment to human capital development and cultural preservation. By providing a dedicated platform for non-fiction cinema, the prize aims to validate non-mainstream narratives and encourage original research among young directors.
