In a major boost for continental digital trade, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has finalized a $25 million equity investment in Jumia Technologies AG. As the private-sector investment arm of the World Bank Group, the IFC’s capital injection aims to strengthen Africa’s digital commerce framework, giving thousands of small and medium enterprises better access to expanding regional markets.
Empowering Merchants and Creating Economic Opportunities
The strategic funding will directly support the development of Jumia’s online marketplace and logistics infrastructure across its core African operations. According to projections from the World Bank Group, the capital deployment is set to transform business operations for approximately 60,000 local merchants active on the platform each year, helping them integrate more effectively into the modern digital economy.
Beyond supporting small business owners, the initiative carries significant labor market impact. The expansion is expected to sustain nearly 1,800 direct corporate positions while creating flexible earning opportunities for more than 100,000 independent sales agents across the continent.
Farid Fezoua, IFC’s Global Director for Disruptive Technologies, Services, and Funds, emphasized the broader socioeconomic value of the deal, noting that pan-African e-commerce platforms serve as vital engines for large-scale economic opportunity. He highlighted that backing Jumia’s next growth phase aids in digitizing supply chains, improving distribution channels, and mobilizing essential private capital into emerging digital markets.
Fueling Africa’s Rapidly Growing Digital Economy
This landmark investment arrives at a pivotal moment for African retail and tech infrastructure. Data from the World Bank indicates that Africa’s e-commerce market surpassed $50 billion in 2024 and continues to expand at a steady annual rate of at least 10%. Furthermore, IFC research shows that online shopper adoption across the continent has grown by an average of 18% each year since 2014, signaling a permanent shift toward digital consumer habits.
For Jumia, which currently maintains operations across eight key African markets, the new funding provides the financial runway needed to optimize its integrated commerce and fulfillment networks. By partnering with Jumia Technologies, the IFC reinforces its commitment to channeling private investment into high-impact digital initiatives that broaden market participation, generate employment, and accelerate sustainable economic growth across Africa.
