Nigeria’s Celebrations: Driving Open Knowledge and Community Leadership in Ilorin

Leading the global lineup, Nigeria will host a vibrant gathering in Ilorin organized by the dedicated CC25 Nigeria team. The event will bring together a diverse coalition of open knowledge advocates, librarians, educators, creatives, copyright experts, and Wikimedia contributors to celebrate 25 years of shared learning and creative freedom.

Designed to be both festive and interactive, the Nigerian celebration will feature an engaging visual “Commons Gallery,” inspiring community conversations, and energetic lightning talks. Attendees will also honor local leaders who have spearheaded open knowledge initiatives across Nigeria. In addition to reflecting on the journey of open licensing over the past quarter-century, participants will attend a hands-on workshop to learn practical steps for openly licensing their own creative works, laying the foundation for the next 25 years of collaborative sharing.

Preserving Indigenous Languages and Empowering Educators Across Asia

In India, OpenSpeaks is co-locating its anniversary celebration with WikiConference India 2026 in Kochi. Centering on Indigenous languages and community archives, the initiative spans a six-month program of online workshops that brings together Wikimedians, archivists, and language activists. The effort culminates in an in-person gathering, the launch of a language documentation consortium, and the creation of open educational resources to help preserve over 60 marginalized languages online.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the Open Horizons team is expanding access to open education across seven cities. Through community-based workshops, teachers, university lecturers, and open education practitioners are receiving practical training on copyright, Creative Commons licensing, and Open Educational Resources (OER). The program will culminate in a grand celebration in Yogyakarta, where participants will showcase local culture and contribute more than 100 openly licensed works directly to Wikimedia Commons.

Building the Future of Digital Commons in South America

In Argentina, LibreBase is hosting a one-day gathering in Córdoba to celebrate 25 years of Creative Commons alongside the country’s established free software, open knowledge, and cultura libre communities. The event brings together technologists, researchers, publishers, and activists for interactive discussions and hands-on workshops.

Highlighting the practical application of open licenses, the Argentine gathering features a digital swap of CC-licensed media and sessions dedicated to creative remixing and Wikimedia Commons. The day will close with forward-looking discussions addressing the future of the digital commons, including key questions surrounding generative AI and open stewardship.
