In a major effort to scale local digital talent, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy officially partnered with Meta, the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN) on Monday, August 17, 2026, to launch a national Artificial Intelligence (AI) Academy. Designed to move Nigerian developers and entrepreneurs from foundational AI concepts to market-ready products, the alliance provides hands-on technical support, grant funding, and global exposure.
Three Strategic Pillars: Skills, Pitchathon, and Bootcamps
The newly launched AI Academy is structured around three core tracks to support participants at different stages of their tech journey:
- AI Skills Development: Accessible to the broader 3MTT learning community, offering free self-paced courses in generative AI, prompt engineering, multimodal systems, data analytics, and building applications using Meta’s open-source Llama models. Courses are hosted on platforms including Coursera, DeepLearning.AI, and DataCamp.
- AI Startup Pitchathon: A competitive track for early-stage tech founders building commercial AI solutions. The top 10 selected startups will pitch live at GITEX Nigeria on September 3, 2026.
- 6-Week Developer Bootcamp: Delivered directly by RAIN, this intensive program offers hands-on technical guidance from Meta AI experts to help developers build functional, market-ready AI software.
According to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to positioning Nigeria as a competitive hub in Africa’s growing digital economy by equipping young professionals with practical, world-class skills.
Funding, Global Summit Trips, and Certification Incentives
To ensure participants can scale their projects commercially, Meta and its partners are providing significant financial and educational backing across all program tracks:
The top 100 learners in the skills development track will receive full scholarships toward official Meta Blueprint certifications, alongside up to $5,000 in Meta advertising credits to promote their projects. Meanwhile, the top two winning startups from the Pitchathon will each secure $5,000 in equity-free equity cash, $2,000 in Meta ad credits, and an all-expenses-paid trip to represent Nigeria at Meta’s global AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, in November 2026.
Sade Dada, Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa at Meta, emphasized that Nigerian developers possess world-class talent, noting that this partnership delivers the practical tools, funding, and global platforms required to take local solutions to international markets.
How to Apply and Join the AI Academy
Interested developers, tech learners, and startup founders can join the program through simple application channels:
- For 3MTT Learners & Developers: Members of the 3MTT ecosystem can access free learning modules directly by logging into their participant dashboards on the 3MTT portal to enroll in Coursera, DeepLearning.AI, and DataCamp learning tracks.
- For Startup Founders (Pitchathon): AI-focused startups must complete their online pitch application before the strict deadline on August 21, 2026. Shortlisted teams will be notified ahead of the GITEX Nigeria pitch finals on September 3.
- For Bootcamp Participants: Developers seeking hands-on technical mentorship for building Llama-based solutions can register for the 6-week bootcamp delivered by RAIN through official ministry announcements.
By blending government infrastructure with global private sector resources, the AI Academy aims to build a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals, reducing reliance on imported technical expertise and boosting economic productivity across Nigeria.
